Real-Life Madden

“This defense should stop them for sure!”

What is normally said by Madden while I’m playing on the computer was tossed around as we all joked on the real life football field.

This Thanksgiving I got up early and drove down to Cranston, RI to participate in an annual tradition that Falkor puts on- the Turkey Bowl. It’s a 11 on 11 full tackle game- it’s the real deal. For a bunch of average joes it’s our chance to pretend we are the players we watch on TV and play in video games.

The game was definitely hard-hitting, first play I got on the field I squared up for a tackle and got stiffed armed in the face. It’s been a couple of days and I’m finally able to move all my body parts.

It was a real blast to play some real football on a real football field. We even enjoyed a “half-time” show when the Cranston West Cheerleaders and Color Guard showed up to practice.

Home for Thanksgiving always means seeing lots of friends and I was able to catch up with a few this week.

Tuesday I picked up Diana and Mike in New York in a late night run back home. It was a definite challenge but as always I was able to tough it out and make it back home in one piece. I decided to drive back home this year since the price of gas was dropping like a Braylon Edwards pass. Driving up the coast prices were just dropping and dropping- always a great thing to see.

Friday I did a little bit of shopping and that night I met up with Dave, Jimmy, and others to go out in Kendall Square. We then went back to Jimmy’s and watched Grandma’s Boy- a very enjoyable movie. Also clearly not a flick for the chicks. Every other minute the guys would crack up and the girls would stare and shake their heads.

Saturday I had the family dinner over at Longhorn’s then I went out with the TH404 boys in Allston. We reminisced and caught up over several towers of PBR- oh the college days.

Yesterday I checked out Mike’s new place in Groton while enjoying the Steelers/Patriots game. Always happy to see a Pats game back home- ironically it’s also the flagship game for CBS, and was probably able to be seen at my house in DC.

Ok well I gotta pack things up here in Massachusetts and get back to DC.

Countdown In A Dark Town, And So It Begins

More football updates:

The Bears/Redskins was a blast. There was a lot of traffic on the way to FedEx Field, but Falkor, Sarah, Emily, and I had a great time at the game. The Club level is not as luxurious as the Loge but the seats were closer, albeit outside. The club level has a really cool indoor concourse where you can lounge around and warm up- we used that to our advantage a lot.

Wrapping up another busy weekend- Friday Adam and I went to the Suns/Wizards game and see why Steve Nash is sung about in Nelly Furtado songs.

Saturday the boys and I hit up a holiday party in DC. It was an ok night- we had a lot of fun on the metro ride back. All I’ll say is that freshmen from Georgetown are ridiculous.

After a quick nap I got back up to do some charitable shopping at Toys R Us. After another nap I got up in time just to see the Patriots go 13-0. Take that Anthony Smith. Who is that guy anywho? Never heard of him.

Well a week from now I’ll be 24. I can feel the quarter life crisis creeping up.

Giving Him The Business

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

Let’s get some football thoughts out of the way:

NC State knows how to give Maryland the business! If you look closely at the first block for the NC State running back, the NC State guard starts to punch the Maryland linebacker in the head- thus the penalty. If you don’t know, the referee’s description of the penalty is an homage to a call made on this play back in the day:

Monday Night Football was down to the wire last night. The Patriots had lady luck on their side and managed to win the game against the Ravens in the last minute. Just check out the highlights for all the drama. I was yelling at my TV late into the night. It’s going to be a tough week coming up next week against Pittsburgh. Also a tough week for me coming into the final weeks of fantasy football. I’ve clinched a playoff spot in my Yahoo! league but despite a six game winning streak in my Sportsline league might leave me out of the playoff picture- I need to beat the undefeated league leader this week and one of the two teams need to lose. Even if I don’t make the playoffs- beating the undefeated leader makes this week my Super Bowl. Man now I know how the Ravens felt playing the Pats.

More football is expected this week- I just got some choice seats for the Bears/Redskins game on Thursday. Falkor and I are going to have a great time.

It’s not all about Football however- I’ve been to a lot of Wizards games too. Raptors/Wizards Saturday with Burak, and Cavaliers/Wizards tomorrow, prolly more to follow- I just get lots of tickets.

Besides sports I also enjoyed the musical stylings of The Dan Band at the 9:30 club on Sunday with my favorites. They played pretty much the same set as last year but hey tickets were cheap. Also it’s been awhile since I’ve walked the sticky floors of the of a nightclub in the middle of shady DC. I love how Dan picks on people on the front row- he knows how to keep it real!

Football Weekend In America

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

While I’m watching the Colts/Chargers game on Sunday Night Football, I’m going to take a minute to reflect on all the football I got to see this weekend.

Last night I went to College Park, MD to see the BC/Maryland game at UMD with Sarah and Falkor. As always Sarah’s Dad throws an excellent tailgate- complete with a Goldschlager before kickoff. I was excited to sit in the cold upper levels of Byrd Stadium to see the BC Eagles take care of the Maryland Terrapins. I was wrong to assume. I was cold and I was excited to see a close game- however BC failed to take care of the Terps. After starting out with a strong record and position on the BCS charts, Boston College is now off the radar. Forget BCS worthy, let’s try Roady’s Truck Stop Bowl worthy (yes that’s a real bowl, and I love the fact that it’s sponsored by a truck stop.)

Right now on Sunday Night Football, Peyton Manning is totally bombing- he’s thrown four interceptions! He’s on the team I’m playing against this week in my fantasy football league; right now I’m trying to hold on to a 20 point lead- you would think that would be enough but I’m also playing against the Charger’s Defense, which has already scored two touchdowns. Crazy week in the NFL.

Also I love the Verizon V-Cast commercial with Madden and the guy cooking hot dogs. I think it’s funny.

I got to see some NFL action live today in Landover. I brought Laura to see the Eagles/Redskins game in my company’s luxury box. Like the Maryland game, another close game but it seems that the good McNabb came to play.

If this weekend was football weekend- next week will be Verizon Center week. I’ll be there three nights next week- two Wizard’s games and a Dane Cook show. Oh Dane Cook, what a silly bitch.

Why The Patriots Will Never Lose Another Game

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

Actually I’m not going to talk about the Patriots as I refer to them in this week’s blog title. It’s a reference to an outrageous headline I heard during an NFL pre-game show back in 2004. My then roommate Phil was shocked to hear it, I wasn’t as they did go on to win another Super Bowl title.

After watching tonight’s game against the Colts may spur on similar headlines. It was a great game, not the blowout that you’d come to expect but I’m glad to see that the Patriots can win even when they don’t have their A-game. That’s prolly why they won’t lose another game.

Sunday football caps off a pretty eventful week. On Tuesday I went to a haunted forest with Neal and a couple of his friends. It was ok, I don’t think I was scared but maybe more surprised. I expected to have people sneak up on me- I just didn’t know when and how. A fortune teller tent at the site got me thinking of getting my fortune told sometime. It could be entertaining.

Wednesday was Halloween and I donned my costume once again and went out with Laura to Georgetown. I was really surprised on the turnout that evening. M street looked more like Adam’s Morgan on a Saturday. I got lots of shout outs for wearing a Red Sox uniform. Gotta love Red Sox Nation. We started the night at McFadden’s- met up with some of Laura’s friends where it was not as crowded as I expected it to be- however it was a Wednesday. One of the last times I was at McFadden’s it was St. Patrick’s Day, prolly not a great day to be there. I ended up at Georgetown at some house party and then a host of other bars on M street. Laura introduced me to Booeymonger, a pretty cool place for a sandwich. Thanks to the DC Cab Strike, we ended up walking all the way home from Georgetown.

Friday I went to the Flyers/Capitals with LJ. First hockey game of the year and I was happy to see all out fighting not just once- but twice. After the game I drove by Neal’s housewarming party- he moved down the street from me and he had quite the party going on, however I didn’t make it a long stay- I had to get up early.

For what? I had to work Saturday morning. It kinda sucked to get up early to pick up pastries but at least I got to see some great General Motors vehicles. After napping for a while I got up so I could meet up with Rebecca and Camille at Local 16, where we were all celebrating Charlotte’s birthda

I feel like a week or two of taking it easy are in order- but I’m sure that’s not happening anytime soon.

Eigo Dekiru Kai?

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

I’m really tired, in fact I may call it a night after this post. I would be tired after the day I had last night.

It all started at 7:30 AM. I got up early so I could meet up with my favorite Marlyand Alumni. We were all going to College Park to see the Georgia Tech/Maryland game. We all met up with CJ and Eliza who were throwing a tailgate party with breakfast and alcohol. Man I felt like I was back in college that morning. We had seats all the way up in nosebleed so I was well exposed to the 85 degree weather and sunny skies. My scalp and forehead are feeling the pain of not wearing sunscreen. It was a fun game despite the elements. The Terps got away with the game barely, they almost let the Yellow Jackets comeback in the 2nd half.

If that wasn’t enough I decided that night to go out and meet up with Rebecca and Camille in Adams Morgan. First I played chauffeur to a couple of Adam’s friends that were in town from New York. After I dropped them off at a house party nearby, I made my way down to the Angry Inch where Rebecca and Camille were in a state of awesomeness. I was not after my morning (maybe i need lessons on how to be awesome.) It was a chill night out.

Of course going out during the day and during the night would be enough for a person right? Not for me, after dropping off the ladies back to their place, I decided to meet up with Adam’s friends at the party I dropped them off at in DC. It was still going strong despite the Police just finishing a house call as I walked up. It was a really interesting house with some interesting people. It was a theme party where guests dressed up as “Mods” or “Rockers”. I ended up on a balcony where nobody was from the area (or this country for that matter) and everyone was talking to each other about different languages and cultures. I think I definitely lacked the cultural credit for the conversation. After I walked back inside I arrived just in time to see two people start making out right in the middle of the room. The sight wouldn’t of been that awkward but they happened to be the only people in the room with everyone else able to watch them from the neighboring kitchen. Nice.

After all my adventures I made it back to my bed at the awesome hour of 5 AM.

So today is definitely a recovery day from last night. Thus I think I need to sleep some more. In fact I’m going to bed.

Only two more days until Boston-Miami. I can’t wait.

Let Me Borrow That Top

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

Before I go on, all fans of Kelly need to watch her latest video: Let Me Borrow That Top. Totally awesome and has tons of cameos.

Not a whole lot going on last week. Went to the Phillies/Nationals with Wendi Thursday. It was my last game at RFK before the new stadium opens. We enjoyed the view one last time as well as all the excellent concessions the Diamond Club brings.

Friday Ian and I went out to see Resident Evil: Extinction. Overall an ok sequel to the first two, but at least Milla Jovovich is still hot. Ian has a new place near AU and it’s not that bad- has the looks of a place in Little Havana however.

Last night Adam had a friend from Atlanta in town so we all went out to Adams Morgan. We all hit up The Reef, which was amazingly not too full. I did run up a pretty big tab however. Afterwards we all had Empanadas at some place next door. Unlike most other people that go out in Adam’s Morgan, I still have not experienced a big slice.

Well I’m all tired out from watching football with Sarah, Laura, and Doug. Disappointed the Redskins lost. Happy the Patriots won. Crushed that I’m losing my office fantasy game. Relieved that I think I’m winning my other league. At least tonight’s Family Guy was so awesome.

Wedding Crashers

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

It’s a good thing I got that hotel room- I definitely needed it. But first let’s go to this week’s kickball game.

It was a forfeit victory for us this week- the other team didn’t have enough players to play, however we enjoyed a game anywho for fun. I managed a nice line drive in the scrimmage. the basement of Kelly’s Irish Times (aka Dungeon of Love or DoL) just led to more good times and a long night of being lost on the Metro thanks to Amber.

Krissy’s wedding was an entertaining night with friends, co-workers, and family (not my family but Krissy’s… more on that later.) I roomed with Ryan, a friend of Krissy who gave a reading at the ceremony (and yes it was the ever popular Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians’s.) I don’t know what it is about weddings- if you haven’t been married yet weddings just make you dream about what you want for your own wedding. Krissy had a nice outdoor ceremony that was simple and elegant.
The reception was a blur with some dancing, some drinking, and even some smoking. Chanelle was once again a dancing machine and Krissy got some interesting gifts, including a bike. We all lit sparklers as her and Mark left in their limo.

After Ryan and I got back to the hotel we got out of our fancy clothes and hit up the Wa-Wa next door to get some food and drinks. When we walked back into the hotel lobby I hear someone call out my name, it was Krissy’s mom. She invited Ryan and I up to her suite for an after party. It was definitely a random end of the night. Krissy’s mom thinks I’m a good dancer.
I think I’m going to be drinking water for the rest of the week. Time to enjoy some football (and some Madden 08 which I just opened up yesterday.)

Are You Ready For Some Football?

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

My love for football has grown steadily since college. From watching Patriots games freshman year to fantasy football last year. Now I’m in two fantasy football leagues and I’m even enjoying watching college football games. My how love flourishes. I think I may have reached the point where Sundays are just going to be useless.

This past week I drafted my team in my office league, I’m satisfied with my choices. I grabbed Shaun Alexander and Tony Romo and even drafted two players that caused me grief last year, LaMont Jordan and Joey Galloway; however with all the preparation I did this year I made sure I grabbed them later in the draft so I wasn’t wasting my picks. Man I feel like a football dork.
But back to Earth for a minute, I enjoyed Labor Day by watching Superbad with Doug. It is by far one of the best movies I’ve seen since Anchorman. It’s the American Pie for a new generation… which really doesn’t make sense since we are the American Pie generation… oh well.

Wednesday’s kickball match was an utterly disappointing loss but we made it up in flipcup afterwards. Ya I woke up the next day without my contacts, car, and sharpie on my left arm. It was one of those nights.

Friday we all celebrated Emily and Laura’s birthday at, where else, Union Jacks. It was an ok night- I wasn’t feeling the tunes the DJ was pumping out.

I don’t know why but last week was all about not sleeping. After three hours of sleep on Wednesday I got just about the same amount after Union Jacks. Why? Because I was smart enough to schedule to bring my car in for an oil change at 8 AM on a Saturday. Ugh- never again. The state inspector was out so that means I gotta bring my car back- and I have to fix my turn signal light before I can get it inspected… great…

At least last night was fun… kinda. Sarah, LJ and his sister Leigh, and I went to the Red Sox/Oriole’s game. LJ and Leigh are Sox fans and I was excited to get a chance to see Dice-K pitch. However Dice-K kinda blew the game and I had to put up with mocking from Sarah instead.

The times after the baseball game were much better. We all went to Fells Point and met out with Cliff and Eliza at Max’s. It was a pretty cool bar with all kinds of different beer but more importantly, multiple TV’s showing all kinds of NCAA games. LJ and I were engrossed with the SFU/Auburn game. It was an intense game that came down to overtime. If you arn’t familiar with NCAA rules for overtime in football, then you should check them out, it lends for lots of suspense.

Ok enough writing I gotta get back to watching the Redskins game- Portis isn’t doing that bad so far… maybe I should of drafted him again too.
