Breaking Promises For Canada Day

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

Role ModelsI woke up with substantially less money and vowed never to party again. Well at least til 4th of July.

Those were my words earlier this week.

I only lasted til Wednesday. As Maxie would say, “life is hard.”

Technically it wasn’t partying, it was a happy hour, a happy hour I wasn’t supposed to be at originally.

Diana and Brett invited me to a happy hour over at O’Sullivan’s (conveniently located near my house) to celebrate Canada Day. I declined the invite citing I had an event to attend at the Spy Museum, however it appears I was mistaken. I showed up there and it was the wrong day. FML.

So I take the Metro back to Clarendon just in time to meet up with Diana and Brett. There was a fun crowd at the bar, full of red clothing and accents. Oh I love the accents.

Since Brett is Canadian the two took extra steps to celebrate properly, they showed up with a decorated cake that we presented to the bar’s owner who happened to be Canadian. So why is it an Irish bar? Well apparently his wife is the Irish one.

At the bar I had the oddest run in. Last year I went on a bar crawl with Rebecca, Adam, and some friends; and we met up with Seth, a friend of Camille who also used to work with Emily. I thought it was funny and we took a photo and sent it to Emily.

Fast forward to last night. I am cutting up the cake to pass around to bar patrons and I offer some cake to a table of guys sitting next to ours. They thank us and this one guy looks at me and goes, “hey I know you- you know Emily!”

I instantly remembered who he was.

“Ya didn’t we have some drinks together a while back? Pho. That’s your name right? Everybody calls you Pho!”

This much was true.

Fate had brought us together a year later under similar conditions. We took another photo to celebrate and sent that one to Emily too.

You would think that maybe he lives close to me or something but he actually lives all the way out in Dunn Loring. What are the odds?

So a few rounds of Lebatt Blue and some Poutine led to going back to my place to watch Role Models, the funniest film that involves LARPING.

Needless to say I woke up again with less money in my wallet, but not in as bad of a shape. However for lunch I just had 4 slices of pizza. I think I need the gym like whoa.

Taquitos, Taxis, and Trouble

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

Dmbosstone: I promised myself I’d stay dry this weekend

Dianaketo: HAHAHA! I plan on getting blitzed.

That pretty much sums up my weekend, it’s always tough to say you’re going to take a weekend off because when you do, everybody else decides to party harty.

Popeyes!!!Well that’s what I did and I was pretty good at doing it. Friday I popped in Iron Man and enjoyed a guilty dinner of Popeyes chicken. I missed the taste of red beans and rice. Saturday I finally caught up with blogging and proceeded to work off all the Popeyes I ate the night before, however the food I ate at the Anderson Family Weenie Roast did a good job at negating the workout. Overall I kept a low profile (except for two hours on Saturday night thanks to Caroline), because four straight weekend of debauchery means I’m resting til the 4th of July. Plus I gotta save some cash after last weekend’s antics.

Last Friday I went out to the Blue Jays/Nationals game with Rebecca and Adam, the game went into extra inning and I was tired so I went back home after the 9th. Despite my original intentions to stay in, I found myself back at home where Sarah and Mike had friends over for drinks. Next thing I know I’m getting dressed and we headed out to Jay’s Saloon, our new summer hotspot. Originally known as the shady bar next to our house (literally next to our house), we decided to have a roommate happy hour there and we discovered it’s an amazing place. It’s our new MacLaren’s.

7-Eleven TaquitosWell after a walk around Clarendon, our crew sloshed back to the home but not before stopping at 7/11 to fulfill our drunken munchies. I saw Mike’s friend Jake buyout ALL the Taquitos on display. I guess he’s a big fan. The choice wasn’t popular with the drunken crowds that were also after some greasy, fatty, semi-Mexican goodness. Jake happily stuffed his face in line as the crowd jeered him for taking all the Taquitos.

On the way home from the the great Taquito heist, we took notice to a half-full can of Yuengling on the street, a fallen soldier in the war known as Friday night. Jake and Mike picked it up, arguing if it was beer or ginger beer. When confirming the identity of the can, they dropped kicked it into the street… hitting a Porsche convertible that was rounding the corner onto our street.

The douchebag driving the car wasn’t happy.

He pulled the Dane Cook move of feeling the imaginary damage to his car and then walked over to give us a piece of his mind. I was ready to back them up but the last fight I got in the middle of was years ago and my glasses are still broken from that encounter. Luckily we walked away unharmed and the d’bag drove away with the hot girl he was with.

And that was only Friday.

Saturday didn’t shape up to be any calmer.

I decided to hit up PQ’s housewarming party where I ran into f.B. Several cups of jungle juice later I was making my way through the ghetto that is Northeast DC to Ozio to meet up with Rebecca, Adam, Amanda, and Mattie.

A parked cab offers me a ride and when I gladly accepted and he then referred me to his friend that was parked next to him. However his friend was driving an unmarked blue station wagon with resident plates. I immediately questioned him on his legitimacy as a DC Taxi driver and the cabbie’s friend told me he was, “an independent DC driver.” I then threw him a lowball price to drive me downtown and he agreed- so I took the shady cab car.

The view from an independent DC driverI feared for my life and kept my hand on the passenger side door- ready to duck and roll if needed. At least it would be a good story for the bar. The cabbie was probably sixty something with a stray dog in the back, so I wasn’t too afraid of him- or maybe I should of been. Jungle juice makes me very trusting. The blur on his dashboard on the left- that was his bible. At least he was a man with faith.

After throwing him some dollars I ran out of the Taxi into Ozio where I enjoy a night of more drinks with the crew.

Around 1:30 or so I got messages from Maxie who I knew was out with LiLu and Cavy having a good time. I was suddenly convinced that it would be a great idea to meet up with them at Bourbon. I hailed another Taxi and made me way to M street. I thought that where Bourbon was. After entering what I thought was Bourbon I realized I paid a cover and walked into Saloun. I then hailed another taxi and spent what little I had left in my wallet to get to Bourbon up the hill on Wisconsin Ave. Even though I finally made it to the Bourbon in Glover Park. They were at the Bourbon in Adams Morgan.

This is why you don’t overbook yourself.

I managed to find a fourth cab to take me back home. I woke up with substantially less money and vowed never to party again.

Well at least til 4th of July.

Long Lost Relatives

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

2646315272_e2b7c0f26b_oThis past weekend was all about family.

This past Saturday I was having lunch with my Aunt Jackie at Coastal Flats when my mom called. It appears that a distant relative passed away in Fairfax. A delegation of uncles and aunts were going to leave Chelmsford to head down here but my grandmother was admitted into the hospital with an infection- so I was asked at the last minute to attend services on Sunday.

Now allow me to explain the family tree in this situation. My Aunt Lan on my Dad’s side married Uncle Hai… Hai Pho. That’s right Lan Pho married Hai Pho- who would of thought there were other Phos out there besides my family. Uncle Hai’s older brother passed so I was going to a meet with an entire family of Phos that I was probably related to somehow but not really. At least we all had the same last name, always a conversation starter.

So at the services on Sunday my Aunt and Uncle invited me to a family dinner Monday night at (where else) Seven Corners. I can’t turn down an offer of free food and a chance to catch up with my cousins Mai and Quang- so I headed over to Falls Church after work and I walked into the restaurant (ironically next to a noodle shack called Pho 75.)

The restaurant was empty except for a reserved half of the dining room full of tables and tables of Pho family members. I recognized a face or two from childhood birthday parties but for the most part I was walking into a family that I kinda fit in with but not at all at the same time. My uncle spotted me and quickly introduced me to a family member who was the MC of the dinner, who welcomed me and asked if I was ready to introduce myself to the family.

He shouted, grabbed the attention of the entire restaurant and said, “I want to introduce a new branch of the Pho family here today.” He then looked to me and I sheepishly stood up and introduced myself, my family affiliation, and my at the request of the crowd- the region of Vietnam I probably came from. I was nervous that the majority of the crowd may not know English but my mom assured me that, “they are very advanced.”

I proceeded to enjoy dinner with my cousins and their cousins, a table full of 30 something married couples. I worked the table pretty well, contributing to their conversation of Facebook and social networking. I did well enough that I was asked where a good place to go out in Arlington would be- the cousins wanted to get drinks after dinner but wanted to stay in Virginia. I was then invited out to the Liberty Tavern to join them for some fun.

As I walked out to my car I pointed out my plates and proclaimed that I must have the coolest plates in all of Virginia. The cousins immediately rushed over to start taking cell phone pictures.

After drinks at Liberty Tavern I knew I was on a roll- and I kept it going with my roommate Caroline with drinks while watching The Office. A pretty good night for a Monday.

The rest of the week was equally as busy. Tuesday Melissa and I went out to check out a staged reading over at Wolly Mammoth Theatre. I’ve never been to a staged reading and I was impressed with the quality of the performance for something done by acting students with only four hours of rehearsal.

Wednesday I sat in for a half of the 76ers/Wizards game. I believe the organization has reached a new low when the cheerleader couldn’t perform better than the team. When the Wizards Girls game out for their 1st half performance they huddled into their usual pre-dance stance but their song didn’t play. A variety of other tunes came on but it apparently wasn’t the right one. After 90 seconds of shuffling songs the girls ran off the floor to the boos of the crowd. Is it next season yet?

Last night Wendi and I saw the Odyssey over at the Foundry Theatre. I was able to meet the group I’d be working for starting next week as well as walk around the space. We had dinner over at Teaism, a quaint tea house that serves interesting boxed meals.

Now this weekend won’t be too eventful, I just finished Waltz With Bashir (don’t worry I’m done Oscar Watch reviews) and now I’ll be catching up on things before I jump into another theatre production- but I am looking forward to great weekend out next week.

This week was the start of lent, a period that means nothing to me but I know there are some others out there giving something up for 40 days- I’d love to hear what you are giving up. If I had to, I was thinking about giving up wearing clothes around the house, but Caroline wasn’t ready for that.

The Accident

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

1021082322This is a post that’s I have waited a long time to write.

Now that some time has passed and I feel that I am finally able write about a big change in my life.

It all starts with a story.

It was the Tuesday before Halloween, I had just got back from the gym and I was in the kitchen preparing my usual post-workout shake. As I was mixing the whey with the milk I heard a distant crash. I thought it was a glass bottle that Simon, my roommate upstairs, may have thrown out his room. Knowing Simon that wouldn’t be something out of the ordinary. It was when what I heard next that told me that it was something totally different.

“Oh my god! Jeff are you ok? Somebody call 911!”

With those words my life took a sudden turn to the unexpected.

I ran outside around to the side of the house, where Simon has a staircase that goes directly into his second story bedroom. I look up and I see Simon in a frantic state. I asked him what happened and he told me that Jeff fell off the staircase.

It was around 11:30 PM and pitch black- I ran back into my room to grab my trusty Mag-Light and ran back outside. I flicked it on and I immediately saw Jeff in the brush next to the stairs. He landed on the concrete walkway leading up to the stairs. A wooden bench next to the stairs broke the fall for his legs.

As Simon ran back into his house to grab his cell phone I walked up to Jeff. I was immediately relieved to hear him breathe- although he struggled to do so and it sound more like snoring than breathing. There was blood coming out of his nose and it looked as if he cut his hand on the way down. It goes to say he wasn’t conscious at all.

Simon ran down while talking with the 911 operator and rambled on and on as panic just took over him. I tried to take control of the situation- telling Simon not to move Jeff and handed him my flashlight. I knew that help was right around the corner and I ran back into the house to get another flash light.

I stood in the middle of the street and waived down the on-coming Calvary of help. fire trucks, ambulances, and police cruisers arrived within minutes of Simon’s call. The one good thing about where I live is that it is close to everything.

I watched from the porch as they worked on him. Police were already interviewing Simon about what happened. It appears that both of them had been drinking and Simon suspected that Jeff stepped out onto the staircase for a quick smoke or piss. An officer walked up to me and took my statement.

Slowly Jeff was taken away and one by one the authorities left the house. Simon was still in a state of shock and anger. Jeff was his best friend and I could see the emotional toll it had on him. He was calling everyone on his phone and couldn’t stop talking.

I drove Simon to the hospital where we found out that Jeff was in critical condition. However since we were not family the information we had access to was limited.

It’s now two weeks since the accident occurred. Jeff is recovering slowly and steadily from a broken neck, back, and ribs- amongst many other injuries. It goes without saying that he’s lucky to be alive after that night.

Today Sarah and I have signed a new lease with a new house nearby. It’s a smaller house but it’s in great shape and Sarah and I look forward to moving past this incident and starting a new chapter of life in Arlington.

There’s a whole lot I’m leaving out of this blog. I feel that it maybe too soon to talk about all the details and there are a lot of feelings associated with those details I’m not ready to write about. The accident started a chain of events that brought a lot of stress and turmoil to my life. That Tuesday was the first week after a long stretch of work and I was looking forward to being able to relax and recenter myself. The accident has kept my life in constant motion but the move this weekend will bring some closure.

Life sometimes brings unexpected events through no fault of your own. While you can criticize and lay blame to these moments, I feel that it is exactly these moments that define who you are as a person. I didn’t ask for these things to happen to myself but I am damn proud about the way I handled it and I walk away from it a better person.

Now it is time to start a new chapter in my life.

Finding The Third Place: Murky Coffee

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

2919291839_988bb8feea_b

This past Friday I had the day off so I decided to try and catch up on some blog posts.

I thought I’d take the opportunity to check out a place that has come highly recommended- Murky Coffee.

When I walked in, I felt like the stereotypical yuppie that goes out to use free WiFi. The place has developed quite the following and even though it was 2:30 PM the front section was already full of glasses and laptops. Luckily I too brought my glasses and laptop in an effort to fit in with the locals. I also brought my blazer which gave me an extra yuppie look.

1447513403_1e4c132aa7_oThe coffee shop probably makes great coffee- but I wouldn’t know, I haven’t ordered coffee in the few times I’ve visited. The reason is mostly because most of the time I visit, I am looking for more WiFi and less coffee. On this visit I purchased a bottle of water.

The wait staff wore the typical black outfits with some red accents- apprently they are trying to match the colors of the establishment. The staff was friendly and buzzing about local bands that are probably indie, punk, or a combanation of the two.

2353912488_1d006cc183_oI took a seat in the backroom where there was additional tables, chairs, and couches of questionable origin. The whole place looks like it was furnished at the nearby Goodwill. It works at giving it a broken in and non-conformist feel, much different from the Paneras and Caribous of the area. There is also a second floor but it was closed on this particular visit.

I actually enjoyed pulling out my laptop and getting to work- however I would of enjoyed the open transparancy of working in the front store area, or maybe even outside.

464261225_0065316fb2_bWhat is it about going to a third place that makes you feel social when you are doing things very anti-social? It’s like driving a nice car- you want to exude one thing (I’m rich!) while you are probably exuding the opposite (I’m an asshole!). Am I one of those people that wants to sit down and silently scream, “LOOK! I’m so cool because I’m writing a screenplay or blogging about a funny thing that happened while I was grocery shopping!” I hope not, but maybe I secretly am.

Overall Murky Coffee has the stereotypical feel that you would expect from a place you’d want to go to be really artsy and write a screenplay. However it’s clearly the most popular place in the area to do so, and that kinda turns me off if I can’t find a place to sit, also the hours aren’t the best for my late night lifestyle.

But maybe next time I have a random day off during the week- I may stop by for a muffin and a table.

Phelpsian Feats

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

ph2008081700037This morning I was reading the Washington Post’s article on Michael Phelps record setting 8th Gold Medal at this year’s Olympic Games. Hear what his relay teammate Aaron Peirsol had to say:

“The term Spitzian feat is kind of outdated,” Peirsol said. “Now, it might be Phelpsian feat.”

Buzz is always created when a record is about to be shattered, especially the records that take time to build, like  total Gold Medals at a single Olympic Games, total home runs in a season, or touchdown passes in a season. The hype just builds up and it’s the only thing anyone is talking about. In the article I read even other swimmers put aside their own accomplishments just to watch Phelps:

Leisel Jones, a gold medalist from Australia, said her biggest thrill here was not her own victories, but watching Phelps.

A level of hype so high almost nothing can break through it. I am most impressed that under that kind of pressure, Phelps not only performed- but he performed at a level that will leave all of his records intact for decades.

Now on to the ramblings.

It’s not much of a Phelpsian Feat but my recovery from dreadful Wisdom Teeth surgery is pretty much complete. I got a clean bill of health on Thursday to which end I bit into a hamburger at the Mets/Nationals game to which LJ saw me try and open a mouth that was a little rusty at actual eating. It was comical to say the least- and afterward it definitely ripped out a few of my stitches.

That hamburger was pretty much the most challenging piece of food I’ve tried after the operation. I went out with Kate after work on Tuesday and I just stuck to soup, so a hamburger was a really big deal.

But ever since Thursday I’ve been fully embracing food again. Friday I had a foot long sub for lunch and Kabobs for dinner (you know how much I love Kabobs.)

Later that night I saw Fast Times At Ridgemont High with Carolyn and I have to say that film was way ahead of it’s time. I also couldn’t believe all the people that were in the movie “before they were stars.”

Last night I walked down the street to Liberty Tavern and met up with Rebecca and just about everyone else. Another first is I haven’t even gone out in all this time- and I definately put my body to the test. Not eating dinner last night did not help at all- and now as I write this I am dying of hunger.

I think I need to go get brunch at the Delhi Darba- it’s so good! All the money saved and pounds lost from this Wisdom Teeth ordeal is about to dissapear.

Coffee Talk

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

I am blogging from lovely Reston Town Center (why I am here will be explained in my next post.)

The Washington Auto Show. I enjoyed the show last year and I wanted to make sure I caught the show again this year. Well I saw plenty of the show after visiting the show three times this week. It’s not that I love cars, it was really a case of double booking myself.

Thursday I wanted to catch up with Ian so I thought the auto show would be a good idea- so we went. The show was pretty much the same as last year except there were a few more new models and a few less cool exhibits. After the show we went to La Tasca so I could experience tapas fare for the first time. It was pretty cool- we ordered a tasting menu that was a bit more costly than I wanted (overall I dropped way too much money this week.) The food portions was a interesting concept- however I didn’t know that meatballs were a Spanish delicacy. Also everything came with a side of mayo to dip with. Very fattening.

Friday I continued Teege appreciation week- it’s her last week with us before she ships off to become a JAG officer. Monday we enjoyed Lars and the Real Girl- a definite recommendation. Friday I took her to the auto show and we went to the Grizzlies/Wizards game.

Yesterday I went out with my Maryland favorites and what did we do? We went to the auto show. Thank goodness I get into the show for free, otherwise I am quickly getting poor. After a lovely dinner at Fado- I quickly made it back to Clarendon for a night of bar hopping. I saw Camille and Rebecca at Liberty Tavern (Happy Birthday Camille!), Saw Nick and all my roommates at Dr. Dreamo’s, then we all went to Irish Four Courts where I ran into even more people (even our new roommate Caitlin.) Afterwards I tried to play drums in a Burak jam session.

I think this week I need to recover. Oh wait- Super Bowl is next week.

Wild And Wonderful

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

I told Rebecca I’d start my blog with these words: I’ve been drinking for four days straight. More on that later.

Let’s start from the beginning. Tuesday I went out with Marjorie to the Phillies/Nationals game. The Phillies are one of her favorite teams so we were rooting for the visiting team (I like to say I was just rooting for the sport in general- I just cheered for anything that happened. Also had to root for my fantasy players Pat Burrell and Jimmy Rollins) It’s really not that hard to cheer for the other team when you’re watching the Nats. For once I actually got to the game in time to catch the pre-game food spread at the Diamond Club. It was pretty nice food.

Thursday I went out with Wendi to Recessions for happy hour. It may not be the prettiest of places but with $2.50 appetizers and jumbo-sized $2.75 beers, we had lots of fun. We later took the show on the road and walked to
Dupont Circle, but not before sneaking into Renaissance Mayflower Hotel for a break. We then tried to play some inebriated billiards at Buffalo Billiards. This would mark day one of chaos.

Day two continued at Clarendon Ballroom Friday night. Now I would not normally show up at this haven of d’bags but Rachel wanted to go there to celebrate her last day before going back to JMU. Perez Hilton was hosting a little black dress party and I guess Rachel and a lot of other females love him. So I waited an hour in line to meet them inside, but once I got in I had quite a good time. $80 worth of alcohol will do that to you (don’t freak out, drinks are just expensive in there.)

Last night Carolyn and I met up with everyone else for Emily’s housewarming party. She has a nice new place near U-Street and Falkor, Doug, and I could only do one thing to housewarm her new place- play tons of flipcup. What started as a 2 v 2 match quickly gathered interest from the throngs of people that didn’t even know what the game was. Soon we were flipping cups well into the late of night.

You would think that after a weekend like that I would be resting today. Oh hell no. I got up early to pick up Rebecca and join the rest of the TMG crew for a day at Charles Town Races and Slots. Dan was nice enough to arrange a day of betting on horses with a great brunch buffet… complete with free beer and wine… score. I have never gambled on horses before but I quickly got into it. Rebecca told Dan to bet on Jetstorm on the second race (that was called the McGinn MS&L Company race) and Jetstorm won! It was a great time had by all.

Ok now I’m thinking about going to bed early and drinking nothing but water for the next few days. I’m going to need it.

Paying Life With Blanks Slips Of White Paper

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

Now this week was a good week. Not only did I get a lot of shit done- but I also fit in a lot of quality time with my friends. I feel like I’m warming up on a hot streak for life, so let’s hope I’m in for a good stretch. Maybe I’ll even get bumped up to the clean-up spot. Props to anyone that understands the analogy of the last two sentences.

On Monday I went out with Marjorie to Soho Tea & Coffee to check out their Stand-Up Open Mic. Some people were funny, others not so much. Joke of the night: Trying to buy stuff at Target with Street Cred.

Tuesday I had the pleasure of having dinner with the ever awesome Rebecca Burtman. She’s such an awesome cook and finds new recipes to dolt me every time we hang out for dinner. That night it was a very nice chicken dish made with only seven ingredients! It was in this neat little book her mom got her, I should check it out sometime because cooking needs to be simple for me. She’s been really good at giving me advice, much like a lot of my friends this week.

In continuing with the events I went out Wednesday with Burak and Laura to The Front Page, where it was half price burgers night. It’s a cool little place and the food is great but I didn’t like that it was bursting with people at that time- I had trouble getting a chair, our group had to talk to the manager just so I could get one.

Tara invited me out to RiRa Thursday so I could join her, Diana, and some of their co-workers for a goodbye happy hour. It was definitely enjoyable to see Diana and her co-workers dish about work in the presence of their boss. Ya that’s something I’m not doing anytime soon, even though their boss seems cool- he rides a motorcycle. However his wife also makes him wear an ugly orange vest while doing so.

I took it easy on Friday- I finished touches on The OBX videos I’ve been working on throughout the week. While I’ve been out every day almost, I took time I had here and there to make edits to the three video series- now it’s all done! I should remember this approach for future projects- maybe I can get The FSC done!

Work on Friday was tons of fun, Mallory showed me this cool British guy called Derren Brown who is a hypnotist of sorts. He has a number of videos where he uses NLP to make people do weird things on the street. It’s quite surreal. He’s gotten away with paying people with blank paper, taking their wallet just by asking, cashing in losing dog track tickets, putting people into video games, and playing Russian roulette. Sci-Fi channel just started doing a US series based on his shows done in the UK called Mind Control.

Lunch was also a treat- to wish some of our interns goodbye we had a Fiesta that included catering from Baha Fresh- best lunch ever.

On Friday I was bummed that Marjorie flaked out on seeing Crowded Streets at Whitlows. However my friends came to the rescue and I manage to have a great time out on U-Street with Rebecca, Camille and all of their wonderful friends. We went out to Local 16 and later on the Black Cat.

On the Metro ride back, I encountered quite the drunk group on my train. It was only me and them on the train and they were taken the token drunken Metro photos- and of course looked at me down the train and yelled, “We need photos with that random guy!” Of course I was happy to play the role of “random guy in drunken photos that you don’t remember.” I also saved them from taking the wrong train afterwards. Oh drunk people.
Wow as I type this I realized I went out every night almost. I rock. But at the same time I completed my OBX Videos- so I don’t feel like I got nothing done- why can’t I do this every week? Maybe I can like I said I’m just getting started.

I’ll leave y’all on this note- another idiot tried to crash that famous house down the street from me.

Party Like A Rockstar

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

It’s hard to balance work and play. I feel like these past two weeks have been all about fun- and less me getting some videos done. On Wednesday I enjoyed a nice happy hour with some cool people at work at Whitlow’s. Thursday I enjoyed a night out on the town with Wendi, we ran in the rain to get food at Johnny Rockets and we then enjoyed some drinks at Old Glory on top of their roof. There was a nice view of the Abercrombie and Fitch store across the street. Oh AF- how you fit the Georgetown look and style.

The week was still in motion with craziness the rest of the weekend. Friday I went out with Ian to play some Laser Tag at Ultrazone. However this outing got out of hand really quick. Originally I called him up and asked if he wanted to check the place out with me- I heard that you could play all night for only $13. Ian asks if he could bring a few friends- of course I say yes. Wednesday he calls me up and asks how many people I can fit in my car- he invited 17 other people! Come Friday I get another call, everyone is meeting up at Tyson’s to eat. He asked if I could pick up two girls at the Pentagon City Mall, of course I say sure. So I’m driving to pick up these girls, who turn out to be very trendy Asian ladies. On the way to Tyson’s I’m making conversation and I ask how they know Ian. I was surprised when they said they don’t know him, they know his friend Marjorie. So now I’m driving friends of friends- I’m thinking who are these people he invited? They all turned out to be really cool people from AU. So with Ian, all of Ian’s universe, and I made our way to Ultrazone after food at Tyson’s and we had a really great time. Like one of his friends said, “It’s like real life halo!” After a night of running around in the dark, we all decided to have a late night (see previous post).

Even though I went to bed at 6 AM on Saturday, the rockstar in me wouldn’t have anything less than me going back out that night. Diana invited me out to Cleveland Park/Columbia Heights to a party that her co-worker was throwing. I was an instant hit when I arrived. Bill called me on my cell phone and everyone there were big 24 fans. If you don’t know my ring tone is the CTU ring from the show. Well Diana, Doug, and I had an awesome time playing flip cup and drinking a weird drink called Skippy. It was vodka, beer, and pink lemonade. It was actually good.

To conclude the weekend, I ran around to do some errands today, but not before spending some time at Rebecca’s pool- she is so good at giving awesome advice on my life. I also had the joy of also hanging out with Camille as well.

So touching back on earlier posts, I went out to Best Buy and bought two games for my Wii- Mortal Kombat, and The Bigs. I can’t wait to dig in.

Work? What work?

Road Tripping

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

Maybe I’ll get some sleep tonight. Seeing how it’s the night before I take a long trip, it’s only normal that something happens that keeps me up late the night before. This time it was my delayed flight back from Massachusetts. Now I have to pack so I’m ready to hit the beach tomorrow.

But it’s been a great week despite the lack of sleep. Tuesday and Wednesday I celebrated the lovely Margaret Landry. Tuesday Neal and I hit up The Deck for a happy hour in honor of Maggie. The place was literally a deck in between buildings. I love it. I have to go there again just because it’s a deck. While I was getting my drinks a drunken European woman who was old enough to be my mom started to hit on me. It was interesting because not many people hit on me, well maybe not enough moms hit on me. It was an entertaining 15 minutes to say the least. She didn’t speak good English but kept trying to tell me all sorts of weird things. Best line: “I want to ask you something and you have to answer it honestly… when was the last time… you lit a woman’s cigarette?”

Wednesday I attended a really nice BBQ at Christina’s house. Her and Mikey have a really nice place, and a lot of people from work was there. It quickly turned into a American Idol/Lost viewing party however, not a big fan of either of those shows.

Friday I flew back to Massachusetts to attends Diana’s commencement from Mount Holyoke. It was a weekend long affair, however I was able to fit in some time to visit Kim in Ayer. We watched The Office and enjoyed fine wines. Saturday I got my ass up early and trekked to FSC to pick up Kim. Then we tailed it over to South Hadley so we could see Diana participated in some kind of Laurel parade. As I saw streams of young women dressed in white I wondered several things. First, it looked like I was observing some kind of giant sorority ceremony. Second, I thought, “Why the hell didn’t I visit Diana’s school more often, some of these girls are cute.” Third I thought, “On the other hand, some of these girls also do not shave their legs… gross.” The night Diana gave an address during a Baccalaureate service.

We stayed in the area overnight in a cheap hotel in Chicopee. After doing some late night cruising of the area- I realized I was in the middle of nowhere. Not only that but the middle of nowhere had bad ass gangstas. The next day I got up early again to see Diana graduate. There were a few people getting honorary degrees, including the producer of The Cheetah Girls and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, who graduated from Mt. Holyoke herself.

After a delayed flight and a long drive back to Arlington, I now have to gear up for another long trip tomorrow. Don’t get me wrong I’m excited- I just wish I could actually get some sleep before these trips.

Swingers

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

After an amazing adventure like last week I should have taken the week to just recover. I just kept the week grooving all to this weekend. Tuesday I hit up RFK for the Braves/Nationals game. Sarah, Doug, and I enjoyed watching the Nats give up yet another game. As of right now they are 15-28, only 72 games more to 100 losses. Thursday Burak and Nicholas decided to introduce me to the Royal Lee, the bar down the street that has karaoke almost every night. It reminds me of Hooligan’s but a little more trashier.

This weekend I’ve been chillin here in the crib. We are holding an open house to find another roommate (Nick is moving out in June). So far I haven’t seen a lot of peoples but I hope today will yield someone. Last night Doug and I hit up Dreamo’s. There an usual amount of people there, we apparently walked into a party for the Washington Area Frisbee Club. I’ve never ran into so many crunch granola types/preps.

This week should be fun, I’ll be celebrating Margaret appreciation week with multiple parties in her honor. Also Diana is graduating this weekend, and then- THE BEACH! My new annual kick-off to the summer season. This year we have a great house and I am going to rock out with sixteen of my favorites. Can’t wait.

This weekend I watched Swingers, and I think it’s one of my new favorite movies. It really gave me a new view on life and women, that and Vince Vaughn is in classic form. It was money baby.

Out And Aboot

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

Had a really neat day yesterday, not only did I get to go out to lunch with all of my work favorites but I also got to enjoy my first happy hour of the year with them too! Now that Mallory and Christina are back the office is coming back to life! We also have a couple of new faces in the office too. I like it. Work’s been good this week and it’s all culminating to my trip this weekend. I’m all packed and I’m really really excited about Montreal.

For those that don’t know- I’m going to Canada to film the start of the Bull Run Rally. It’s a multi-leg race where teams ride cars from Montreal to Key West. It’s kind of like the Amazing Race, where I don’t really know where I’ll be going from day-to-day. It certainly has a sense of adventure where anything could happen.

Well off I go- wish me luck!

Ya I Know All About That

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

Another wonderful weekend in DC. Friday I went out to Dupont with my favorite people. Lindsay invited me to celebrate the birthday of one of her NIH co-workers. As I am introducing myself to Jay, a Korean from Seattle, he tells me of his future plans for medical school and asks me where I am going to medical school. After telling him I’m not going to be a doctor he asks if I’m going to be a lawyer. After I told him what I do- he just looks at me in amazement. Ya I’m amazed I’m down here doing that too. I’m sure my Dad would of wanted me to be a lawyer at least.

It was a great night out on the town with the crew. We first hit up The Front Page, then over to The Big Hunt, and then Lucky Bar. I think Doug, Ben, and I were great after the end of that night. Moments I’ll have to remember: using Emily to check out some chick and Jay thinking I was the man for knowing the words to T.I.’s “What You Know.” I remember I ended up walking from Rosslyn back to my house- a walk I could only do if I had a few in me.

Saturday I woke up from whatever happened the night before and I decided to look up the lyrics to “What You Know”, and I found it to have a lot of slang terms i didn’t really know. Thanks to the Urban Dictionary, educated myself on the meaning of the lyrics- and was shocked to learn what those words really meant. But at least I can say I know all about that, and after going on YouTube, I found out I know some Math too.

Last night I went to Mallory’s wedding. It’s pretty much the first wedding of any of my friends, it was a really pretty affair, everyone looked beautiful and it was a nice cozy, simple affair. The reception was also nice, the food was excellent and the dancing was pretty good too. I have to say that Chanelle is a dancing machine, nay she is a dancing force.

After a long long drive back to Arlington, I saw that there was some time left to head over to Ragtime to celebrate Chandra’s birthday. I enjoyed some friendly drinks, conversation, and Golden Tee with some of my awesome co-workers.

Today I spent a lot of the day cleaning the grill in my backyard. It’s almost ready for the summer, just need to find a place to buy some lava rocks.

I can’t wait for the summer.

Late Nights

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

Last night was what Margaret would call a late night. Raging party at Sarah/Doug/Lindsay/Diana’s place, and whole lot of people showed up- even some peoples from out of state. Doug and I were representing the dragon on the beruit table- writing that just sparked memories of the Jonas Pinwheels, the old college team I played with. The best shot I made last night however had to be throwing a chocolate chip cookie into someone’s cup in a food fight that ensued later that night. Ballin’.
Amongst other games I was convinced by several parties to take part in a little something called Dance Dance Revolution. Unlike my sisters, cousins, and any other Asian; I never played the game. However with Jessica already playing- the thought of an Asian match-up quickly became just as exciting as the Dice-K vs. Ichiro matchcup. Classic moment as I played for the first time, Diana had to make the observation: “Look he’s never played and he’s perfect- it’s because he’s Asian!” I hope I made my race proud in embracing my heritage. Did you know that next month is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month? I wouldn’t of known if it wasn’t for the timely NBC 4 PSAs. Towards the end of the night Cliff, Laura, and I found some questionable content on Doug’s CPU. This led to a large and somewhat disturbing viewing party in his room. Seeing the entire crew together only made me more excited for Hatteras. It’s going to be a great week.

Oh and the quote of last night: “Patrick you need to embrace your Asian half.” -Jessica
My roommate and I had a drink at King Street Blues on Friday the 13th. It is a really nice, cozy, place. The bartender was real friendly and I would consider grabbing another drink there again. A trip to Dr. Dreamo’s was cut short when I realized I lost my ATM card. Figures it happens on Friday the 13th.

My parents are here this weekend, and I’m probably going to spend some time with them today. Cleaned up the house all last night in preparing for it. It’s been really rainy and cold and I’m not really a fan of the weather. But I am a fan of the Red Sox- they are kicking major ass right now, next weekend is the first Yankees/Red Sox series, sounds like I need to make some plans to watch those games.

Raw Is Raw

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

WWE Raw on Monday was trailer park awesome! I took the metro in, where I ran into Chandra, Christina, and Mikey. Along the way the t-shirts of my fellow metro riders ranged from simple “Austin 3:16” to the extreme Degeneration X and John Cena designs. Some even had homemade posters. I arrived at the Verizon Center and joined Chanelle, Mallory, Krissy, and others in watching some of the lame pre-game matches. Things got a lot better though when the live television portion started. Something I noticed (besides the fact it all looks very fake sometimes) is that any time a wrestler enters the arena, his theme song and entrance video starts blaring- even if the appearance is supposed to look unplanned and random. I did enjoy watching the entrance videos, it was a great combination of cheesy graphics and wrestling footage, looped every 20 seconds.

I enjoyed seeing all the famous wrestlers like John Cena, Shawn Michaels, and even The Rock; I really liked discovering other wrestlers like Ric Flair, Eugene, and Cryme Time- it all goes to show that WWE has a stereotype for everyone! There was a lot of action that night, Kane toppled the Announcer’s table, a match against the WWE female champion turned into a free for all brawl with what looked like the entire female lineup, and John Cena and Shawn Michaels fought fought three tag teams in a steel cage match. But I have to say the most entertaining moment was when Donald Trump arrived to sign the deal with Vince McMahon. They both have a wrestlers in the upcoming Wrestlemania -and the loser has to shave his head. Well it looks like Vince is going to be shaving his head come next month. So after they arrived in the ring to sign the contract, Donald and Vince got into an argument where Trump shoved Mr. McMahon over a table- nice to see that the Donald can kick ass!

Well March Madness has definitely set in- right now I think my bracket is busted- with one of my final four eliminated. Oh well I at least I can cheer for Georgetown (sorry BC & Holy Cross, you didn’t make it that far, and UMass- you didn’t even make it this year!) Work this week has been entertaining with tons of smack talk about each other’s brackets. It also doesn’t help to have three TVs in your office in which to watch all the games.

Friday I was supposed to go see Addicted to Oil with Melissa and Lindsay, but the viewing was sold out- boy Thomas Friedman must be a popular guy. Instead we watched some of the NCAA games at Buffalo Billiards. It was nice to cheer with a room full of drunk people.

Saturday was my day, and by that I mean St. Patrick’s Day. I celebrated the holiday with two beautiful Irish ladies, Patrice and her roommate Kelly, not only are they Irish- but they are from Massachusetts! We attempted to crawl our way down Wilson Blvd, starting at Dr. Dreamo’s. We drank a lot of green beer- my first time with the weird colored stuff. After watching Georgetown beat BC we went down to Kitty O’Shea’s, however being an Irish bar it was packed, and thus not as great as Dr. Dreamo’s. All in all though it was a great night.

Well some excited things happening at work this week, and I just installed NBA Live 07 onto my PC- looks like I’m wasting more time, except I don’t know much about basketball- what the hell is “the post” I keep hearing about?

Dance, Dance

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

I am excited. I am excited for fantasy sports. I am excited for March Madness. I’m excited for nice weather. What I’m not excited about is being tired.

I pulled off two trips to the Verizon Center: first on Tuesday for a Raptors/Wizard’s game and then on Friday for a Capital’s game. Ben and I went to the Wizards game, it was a total domination of the Toronto Raptors, a thrashing that left me wondering what sport Canada doesn’t suck at? Maybe it’s Hockey. Dan decided to make the game a little more interesting with a little wager on the total points of the game. I grossly miscalculated the scoring potential. One of Margaret’s friends won the pot. It was my first time traveling down there by car, which I carpooled with Margaret. Amazingly DC isn’t that bad at night.

Friday I went to the Capital’s game with Rebecca- and it was a lot of fun. There was a fight which kept me entertained as the home team lost. Of course after seeing numerous National’s game I’m used to see a DC team lose. After the game I got a word that Doug, Sarah, and Emily were in my hood at Dr. Dreamo’s. Carolyn and I went down there to meet up and enjoy the many selection of beers they had to offer. It’s too bad they don’t sell any liquor. I should go back and check it out when the open the beach patio. After throwing some darts that night I’ve come to realize that I should stop trying to put money into Jukeboxes- they never play the song you want.

There’s been a lot of transient faces at my house- my roommate Simon brought back some drunk chick who proceeded to spend the entire night in the bathroom washing her face and throwing up. However she also cleaned the entire bathroom when I got up. That’s gotta be a plus.

Last night I went out with Melissa to Union Jacks, and I had a really fun night. Melissa certainly dances to her own beat. I also noticed an influx of older gentlemen, definitely higher than usual. Now dancing with 20 somethings when you’re 70 is one thing, trying to get their numbers after last call is something else. Gross.

This new Daylight Savings Time situation has left me with even less sleep than usual. I walked in last night and wondered how I was out for that long. I don’t like how my computer updated the time but my VCR didn’t. I know this will probably lead to problems in a month.

Oh I just thought of more things to be excited about: WWE Raw at tomorrow (I know, real high class Patrick- but at least the Donald will be in town) and St. Patrick’s Day. Let’s hope I can make it through the week first.

Bally’s Total Lie

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

There’s an ad campaign from Bally’s Total Fitness (you know the sponsors of the Washington Wizards Dance Team) I’m sure they also do gyms and stuff but I go to Gold’s Gym. Ok well the ads consist of a high energy testimonial of an actual person who lost weight by going to Bally’s. The person is overweight and talking about how life was terrible being a fattie. Then they do this awesome spin move and they transform to the after (thinner and better than ever). Sounds like a great ad… if they actually transformed to a thinner and better than ever person. I swear they go from a fattie to a fattie wearing different clothes. Maybe the results arn’t as dramatic and of course let’s remember- your results may vary; however their before and afters only convince me that Bally’s knows how to hide those love handles with a black shirt.

In other news, I had pretty nice new week.  Wednesday I once again got tickets to the Wizards game. It was much nice that the usual because TMG sprung for a really nice food spread- I went on full Fattie Manderson mode that night. I took Doug to the game and we had a good time watching the Wizards win with seconds left on the clock, which is always a great game… except it was with the Knicks. Who lets the Knicks almost beat you? The game should of been a landslide.

Thursday was Mallory’s birthday- her 3rd annual 21st birthday. Krissy and I had this idea to spike her cubicle with 23 balloons. After the game on Wednesday I tried to go to Harris Teeter to buy and fill said balloons but the 24-hour store decided to close. Awesome. So I got up early that morning and picked up the balloons at Giant. So I’m driving in before I think she comes in to plant the balloons but apprently it wasn’t early enough. As I’m pulling into the parking lot she’s getting out of her car- I bolt it to another level and after an elaborate scheme, finally surprised her with the balloons. You’ll have to see it play out on the video I shot of it.

Saturday I had a great night. I kicked it off with Teha’s housewarming party, I hung out with some people from work and I met Chandra’s new boytoy- who happens to be from Concord. He invited me over to watch today’s Pats game on his 61-inch plasma, seems like a really nice guy so far. Teha packed her small apartment pretty nice, but she had the tools for the job, good amounts of beer and wine and a nice ice luge to top it all off.

After Teha’s I went to Dupont Circle with Carolyn to see Rebecca, Adam, Camille, and others. We were all at Buffalo Billiards to wish Adam off as he returns to Australia for a few months. He’ll be coming back to work for the State Government (I guess it helps to work on the Webb campaign). I met a lot of Rebecca’s friends from AU- all interesting people. Her friend Carla was brash enough to call me an asshole and a sweetheart within a matter of minutes. All in all a great night.

Right now it’s snowing for the first time this year. Too bad it prolly won’t be enough to cancel work.

Jack Is Back

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

I love 24. I also love the Patriots. Put them together in one weekend and I’m a happy camper. But back to that later.

I had a pretty eventful week. Tuesday was movie night with Sarah/Doug/Lindsay’s house. We watched Little Miss Sunshine; it was the typical quirky independent film. I liked it and had my share of laughs but it really didn’t wow me too much. Wednesday I had a little happy hour action with some of my work favorites at Ragtime. Friday I watched Beerfest with Carolyn, Broken Lizard makes some good stuff. Even though I don’t think I could drink beer from a boot much less complete a power hour.

Saturday I went to see Monster Jam in the McGinn suite. It was my first Monster Truck event, and I’ll have to say it was pretty memorable. Grave Digger totally dominated the scene. He crushed stuff like there was no tomorrow. They had motorcycles and ATVs as well; even though I think the dramatics of the racers afterwards is pretty fake. After the show Carolyn and Caroline and I got some BBQ and walked from the Verizon Center to The Mall- why? Because we could, that’s what I love about DC, it’s pretty walkable.
That night I went out with the crew to Silver Spring to visit a house party. It wasn’t that bad, had some interesting conversations about cars and ended the night at McGinty’s.
Today I shopped some more and got some new sunglasses amongst other things. I made it back here in time to see the Patriots game- I had to leave it at the end to catch the 24 season premiere- I love that Jack is back! After watching five seasons I’m seeing a pattern where Jack always has to have grown a beard in between seasons and thus has to shave it off. I can’t wait to see the next two episodes tomorrow.

Talking about TV to watch I’ve picked up a couple of shows: The Apprentice: LA and Armed and Famous. I’ve watched them at work last week and they might get added to the weekly line-up; however the last thing I want to be doing is adding more TV in my life. I really don’t watch a lot when I’m at home but I’m busy enough as it is.

Tomorrow I have to work on my car a bit- one of my hubcaps went missing and now I gotta replace them all, can’t be riding dirty like that. Next weekend is shaping up pretty good, especially on Saturday- and it’ll be here quicker than usual thanks to Martin Luther King! Thanks MLK!

Here’s To The Night

Originally published at The Definitive Dmbosstone. Please leave any comments there.

Well it’s been an awesome week for going out. Thursday was the Strauss Radio holiday party. It was at this swanky place in Adams Morgan. I got to hang out with some of my work favorites and I met the head of ABC News Radio in DC amongst others. Afterwards Chandra and I went to Ragtime where we sat next to this creepy looking guy and had dirty martinis. Carolyn picked me up to end the night.

Friday was a fun time at work; I got some hardcore editing done with Paul (my freelance editor). I managed to once again put awesome music into my work. This piece is going to feature P. Diddy’s Victory- now I thought the instrumental was original but I discovered that it’s actually a sample of Going the Distance from Rocky. No wonder they used it in the Rocky Balboa trailer. After a long night at work I went up to Lindsay/Sarah/Doug’s house for our Holiday pot luck dinner and Secret Santa. I provided bags upon bags of salad. Greg brought potato latkes and let me tell you- I totally love them. It’s like a classier hash brown. Diana got me the latest Guster CD, and I can’t wait to listen to it. I got Sarah a pirate book and a bottle of wine- two things I know she loves. I was so glad and relieved to see her beam at my present. It’s so stressful sometimes to get a gift you hope someone will love. But in the end it’s all worth it. The book had all these trinkets like treasure maps and pirate oaths. I know that Sarah will be digging holes in her back yard all winter. Diana got season 1 of Wonder Showzen (a show I later remembered watching with Bill and Mel one late night). We popped it in and if you haven’t seen it, I recommend watching it late at night while either drunk or high- it’s better to comprehend that way (I think must have been one of the two when I watched it back in Fitchburg). After the party I drove over to Carolyn’s and hung out with her friend Hillary and her cousin Tony.

Saturday I turned 23- it’s weird to think I’m getting old. What ever happened to college and partying day after day? Well at least I was able to party that night. My friends took me to Baltimore to this cute bar in the inner harbor called Howl at the Moon. Sarah won a happy hour party so we were getting crunked at 6 PM. Oh that was definitely a long night. All I can remember is dancing to Shania Twain on stage in front of the entire bar, ordering, various writings on my arms, seeing Laura win a pole dancing contest, people buying me all kinds of drinks, buying 12 jello shots for all my friends, taking two more jello shots from Supergirl, ending up in Bethesda where I snuck into the Palisades and headed over to Union Jack’s, and definitely making some drunken texts and calls. One of those calls was my mom, who called me in the middle of the night to wish me a happy birthday. That must have been an awesome conversation. All in all it was a great birthday. Thanks to everyone who called, texted, and posted shit on my Facebook and MySpace pages. This isn’t my first birthday away from home but it is my first one in DC and away from Massachusetts- as I said in my jello shot toast, I am really thankful to be able to pick up my life, move it somewhere else, and still manage to surround myself with wonderful people. I am thankful for all my co-workers, family, and friends. They have really made life in DC enjoyable. I was afraid that I’d know nobody down here and I started off not knowing anyone. I’m really glad to have the friends I’ve made so far- and I know it’s only the beginning. To my other friends back at home I’m thankful that they haven’t forgotten about me. When I come back next week I can pick things up where up and have a great time with them for the holidays. I love you all.
Damn that was a great way to end my post- too bad I still have more shit to write. So today I treated myself to a Red Barron pizza and Smoked Salmon for my meals. Clearly a fattie moment. I went shopping today and got myself a new cell phone case (Teha broke mine at the Strauss holiday party). I also got other goodies for my house. Now I hope to crack open some Xmas cards and start on that shizzle (As Chanelle would say, or maybe she uses that word in a totally different context). I still have to do some holiday shopping but I still have one more week before I have to take another long drive to Massachusetts (thank goodness I have EZPass this time). I wished I could of gotten some cool GM cars to take back to New England. I’m getting to test drive some cars before and after the Holidays. I got myself a Pontiac G6 this week and after I get back, a Saturn Aura. I’ll write about those experiences later!

Ok time to watch The Office Christmas special and write cards!
